Some of the most common blood tests for liver function include the transaminase enzymes aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT), which are released by the liver when it is damaged.

Although ALT is found mainly in the liver, AST is less specific, as it can also be present in heart muscle and other tissues. The measurement of ALT and AST levels is just a tool to give you information, and is not a final diagnosis.

Your doctor is able to refer you for a more comprehensive liver function screen than is available by self-testing, and you should speak to your doctor if you are anxious about your health or are concerned about your symptoms.
